Michael Portmann (Project Coordinator)
This project is run by Dr Portmann. He received his PhD in Eastern and Southeastern European History from University of Vienna. His research interests include nation state formations, collective memory, revolutions and historiographies of Yugoslavia during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His main regional area of expertise is Eastern and Southeastern Europe in general and former Yugoslavia in particular. He has published in German, English, Bosnian/ Croatian/ Serbian languages. He also uses Czech, French and Rumanian in his research.
He has been awarded grants including Zeit Stiftung and Richard G. Plaschka Prizes. He is also a Board Member for the Komission für Geschichte und Kultur der Deutschen in Südosteuropa (e. V. Tübingen).
He taught classes such as History of Yugoslavia, State Building and Nationalisms in the Balkans at the University of Vienna in Austria and University of Bern in Switzerland. He currently is a senior research associate at the Institute for Modern and Contemporary Historical Research at Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
