Anna Vakali (Research Fellow)
Anna Vakali (Greek-German) holds a PhD from the Middle Eastern Studies of the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Basel (Switzerland). She defended her PhD Thesis, titled ‘Tanzimat in the Province: Nationalist Sedition (Fesat), Banditry (Eşkiya) and Local Councils in the Ottoman Southern Balkans (1840s to 1860s)’, in May 2017. She initially started her PhD studies at the Orientalisches Seminar of the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg (Germany), but following the change of affiliation of her supervisor, Prof. Dr. Reinkowski, she changed to the University of Basel.
She holds a BA degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2003), and an MA degree from the Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History at the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey (2007).
Presently, she is based in Istanbul, working as a research follow in the current project, as well as an archive specialist at the Archives and Documentation Center of the Boğaziçi University. She is fluent in Greek, German, Turkish and English, and has an advanced reading ability of Ottoman Turkish (rika) and an intermediate command of Arabic.
